Persevere It took me a couple or goes to get into this novel, but I'm so glad I did because once you're in it grips you and won't let go til it's over. At first you think 'where's this going' and then you realise nowhere and isn't that how life often is. I love, love, love the dialogue, it's so poetic. It only has four stars because I found one of the characters so wonderful I was tempted to skip the scenes she wasn't in to get to her.
Unputdownabubble I read somewhere Mendelson being compared to Barbara Pym and it's true the paralles are there; academe, love frustrated. Mandelson, however, paints darker characters than Pym with darker denouments. The title and cover of this book may suggest that this is a 'womans book' but it isn't, I enjoyed every page of it and I'm a bloke.
Fantastic read This was a great book. Well written - it sucks you in to the lives and troubles of the characters and you can't help but empathise with most of them: academically gifted but emotionally stunted Victor, his wife who feels her life is passing her by; self harming daughter Eve, intelligent but craving the love and attention of her family and the youngest daughter, charismatic but academically failing Phoebe. The climax is not unexpected but is satisfying. I couldn't put this book down and will definitely read... more info
sheer brilliance I own both of Mendelson's book and cannot wait for her next one. I have read her books over and over. They are brilliant, you cannot help but be totally owned by this book once opening the cover. Mendelson's story lines are everything you think/dream/worry about as you develop and wonder why no else questions life as she does. Every woman she read her books, it tackles every emotion you will experience. You will be gripped.
