Editorial Review:
This worthy winner of the Smarties prize in 1989 is a timeless classic that is enjoyed by children of all ages as well as by the adults who are continually asked to read it again and again. Follow the family's excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of the bear. What a surprise awaits us all in the cave on the other side of the dark forest. Michael Rosen's lyrical, repetitive text reads aloud beautifully and Helen Oxenbury's delightful watercolour illustrations not only provide the perfect complement but also add another dimension to the story itself. (Ages 3 and over)
A Big Book edition of this story is also available.

A favourite for many years This is a wonderful book, to read out loud as well as to listen to. My daughter loves it and I really enjoy reading it to her. The illustrations are gorgeous and she enjoys pointing at the things she recognises along the way. She's now starting to join in with some of the sounds and I know this will be a popular bedtime story for years to come.
A timeless classic As a primary school teacher, this book is never far from my desk when I have a spare five minutes at the end of the day. Although to be completely truthful, the children know almost all the words, so the book is almost becoming redundant. Almost.
The pictures are incredible and the story becomes a sort of chant, as children read along. I personally, consider this book to be one of the greatest children's stories ever written next to The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.... more info
So much more than "just" a book! Its great to read, and of course the "bear" hunt afterwards into the woods is pretty good. Children love this book, and ask for it over and over again!
Fantastic This is such a fun story. I have even used it on a teddy bear's picnic, getting the children to act out each part eventually finding a rather large teddy bear. Children of all ages love it.
