Editorial Review:
Cerulean Sins is the 11th in Laurell K Hamilton's darkly erotic, blood-soaked series featuring Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter. Think Buffy with more gore and sex. Anita, for the uninitiated, is almost like a supernatural police officer, taking on cases that involve, among other things, werewolves, the-undead and all manner of other creepy things. This time around, she is asked to reanimate a corpse that holds the key to a long-ago crime but there are several beings that don't want the past dug up again. Add to the mix a lot of bureaucratic vampire politics and the arrival of a positively psychopathic female vampire and Anita, as usual, is in for an action-packed ride. It's hard to imagine hardcore Blake fans not being entertained by this latest instalment even though it focuses on the more romantic elements of Anita's relationships.
Although the emphasis is once again less on the mystery and police work that made the earlier books so enjoyable, there are still plenty of developments in Anita's life that lead one to believe that, unlike a lot of her adversaries, her character has a lot more potential. With the disappearance of Buffy from the small screen, it's more than possible that many Buffy fans will migrate to this series to get their regular dose of un-dead butt-kicking action. But newer readers will be hopelessly out of their depth trying to understand the already complicated relationships and back story that so much of this book relies on. They should go back to the start and read Guilty Pleasures. --Jon Snow

Setting up the plot for future books The night starts off reasonably for Anita -- she has a straightforward job of reanimating a recent corpse to establish the cause of death. But things rapidly spiral out of control: the vampire Musette, Belle Morte's servant, arrives in town three months early, before negotiations are complete, causing chaos and consternation; there's a werewolf serial killer on the loose and Lieutenant Dolph is acting angry; and some rather spooky men are following Anita around.
Still rather too much emphasis on sex,... more info
I enjoyed this, again. I don't think that newcomers to the series would get any kick out of it. They should definitely start at the beginning of the series. Little plot, emphasis on sex and Anita's personal development. Belle Morte and vampire politics figure large. And a shapeshifting serial killer. The synopsis on Amazon about a corpse and a long-ago crime is rubbish. To be ignored! Yes, Anita at the beginning is asked to raise a corpse and the "why" will become apparent later on in the book, but it has little to do with that... more info
Bearable
After the shocking change of the mood and complete destruction of the series in "Narcissus in Chains", this book was somewhat bearable. There is a story to follow (weak but better than the previous one), there is a crime scene and even though Dolph has gone completely mental, he is included in the story.
Unfortunately Anita is still jumping everything that has a pulse, and each scene takes up pages and pages *yawn*. Everything seems to be only about sex, and it is really tiresome. The crimes,... more info
Porn Free... Like a lot of people I love the Anite Blake books, at least, I did. Then came the introduction of sex, and more sex, and more. It was getting silly in the last few books and just became ludicrous in Cerulean sins. Forget the plot *30 pages scattered at the start and finish* this is the adventures of Anita (bury me in a Y-shaped coffin)Blake the porn queen. For a book that's so large (you could knock a buffalo senseless) this is tiresome after the first two encounters. If the books continue like this then... more info
