• Disappointing tragedy or tragicly disappointing
  Depardieu brings all his talents to the part of Chabert. Sadly he is too often betrayed by his well-fed frame and beaming smile to be convincing.

  The sets and costumes are perfect, and the character of Derville the lawyer is exeptionally well concieved and performed.

  This is a tale of misfortune and misery, yet there was no display of tears, no fits of anger, no display of love.

• A spell-binding three-cornered duel.
  One of the best films I've ever seen. The story is set in France in the period just after the fall of Napoleon.
