Jim Carrey's best work This film is another example of the so called critics and professional film reviewers getting it so wrong by completely discrediting the merits of a truely impressive film. True, the film is darker, the humour is more subdued and harder to spot but that is what helps make this movie a great film. So it flopped at the cinema ... who cares!! So it got rubbished by the critics ... well if Ive learned anything; I leaned not to listen to critics. Always judge a movie yourself, dont listen to some pretentious... more info
After 10 years now my fav Carrey movie When I first saw this I couldnt really get it - 10 years later (and older) I find it my favourite Carrey movie - the one scene I cant watch is the medieval jousting which is too long - but as the other reviewers tell it there are moments of genius in this - the karoake scene has me dying with laughter - i like my comedy dark and unsettling (and lets face it there isnt much of that in these days of hype and useless stars). So highly recommended.
For US$20M, Carrey ought to have done better This is clearly not one of Jim Carrey's better movies. And I can mention several reasons. To start off the direction and script of this movie is way to dark. A superior American comedy I find many American comedies a touch unsubtle to say the least. This is no different in many of its scenes, but the theme is quite subtle, the style is black comedy, which the Americans don't always get right, and some of the material is excellent. It also has one of the better over the top comic actors of recent times at the top of his game. He shows how suitable he is for the darker stuff, which he should really concentrate more on than his standard whacky roles. I surprised myself by really enjoying it.
