Editorial Review:
The most viscerally frightening and disturbing homicidal maniac picture since The Silence of the Lambs, Seven is based on an idea that's both gruesome and ingenious. A serial killer forces each of his victims to die by acting out one of the seven deadly sins. The murder scene is then artfully arranged into a grotesque tableau, a graphic illustration of each mortal vice. From the jittery opening credits to the horrifying (and seemingly inescapable) concluding twist, director David Fincher immerses us in a murky urban twilight where everything seems to be rotting, rusting, or moulding; the air is cold and heavy with dread. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are the detectives who skillfully track down the killer--all the while unaware that he has been closing in on them, as well. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey are also featured, but it is director Fincher and the ominous, overwhelmingly oppressive atmosphere of doom that he creates that are the real stars of the film. It's a terrific date movie--for vampires. --Jim Emerson

Very good film but overated Seven is a great film but in my humble opinion, I find it to be overated. Yes, the murder scenes are amazing and the acting from Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt and Kevin Spacey is brilliant, the film takes too long to get going and as there are 7 murders and the film is over 2 hours long, this means alot of the film is wasted with unessecery scenes. Seven would have gotten 5 stars if they had cut the running time by 20 minutes.
A work of art Seven is a masterpiece of the horror/thriller genre and it should be treated with such respect.
The ever-twisting and unfolding plot keeps the audience in a state of limbo and constant tension - it's like you're in a headlock and you can't get out.
Fincher has the right combination of gore, drama and tension mixed in with anticipation at every turn.
This film is not to be missed by any fan of the horror or thriller genre.
Treat with care. This is more than scary, more than disturbing, more than frightening. The plot is unrelentingly grim; rain is always falling, the murders will make you feel insecure and the ending is as far from happy than is possible. Despite all that (or maybe, because of), this is one of the best, if not the best, horror/thriller films I've ever seen. The plot is so cunningly written, you never know what to expect. Although, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman do good jobs of acting, the real prize here is to... more info
A fantastic portrait of the corrupt city David Fincher perfectly evokes a very special milieu. I lived in an enormous decaying Victorian flat in central London for nearly seven years, and when I watch Se7en and Fight Club, I feel he knows my world. Tube lines running under the building, crumbling apartment blocks, lives overwhelmed by the pressures of the city, cockroaches, things that don't work, loneliness, apathy, greed, sleaze, neglect, it's all gorgeous ugliness in the hands of Fincher. The plot moves on at a good pace and the... more info
