After making a critically acclaimed debut with the low-budget independent drama Heavy, writer-director James Mangold took on this gritty crime drama, which was highly touted as Sylvester Stallone's long-awaited return to a serious dramatic role. With an illustrious cast of co-stars, including GoodFellas alumni Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, and Ray Liotta, Stallone plays Freddy Heflin, the ineffectual sheriff of a New Jersey suburb that a group of corrupt New York cops have turned into their own off-duty criminal empire. Deaf in one ear and desperate to prove his worth, the sheriff takes on the cops with standoffish assistance from an Internal Affairs cop (De Niro), resulting in an explosive climactic showdown. The stellar cast can't be beat, and Stallone is quite good as the overweight cop whose pride is on the line. Mangold's script is wildly uneven, but Cop Land still packs a white-knuckled punch. --Jeff Shannon

Stallone impresses against a quality cast This movie shows a side of Stallone we haven't really seen since Rocky I. He plays a sleepy sheriff in a sleepy town surrounded by crooked cops, but not really having the guts to do anything about it. With a cast that included Harvey Keitel, Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta, Michael Rappaport and others you'd expect Stallone to be unnoticeable, But not only does he hold his own, he shines through as the star of the movie. With great direction and cinematography this is a film worth watching again and again
Fantastic This film can be watched over and over again as each time you always find something new in the plot. An all star cast of Harvey Keitel, Robert de Niro, Ray Liotta, Sylvester Stallone and Robert Patrick bring fantastic performances to this film.
BRILLIANT I was so destined to see this film. When I saw a small trailer It looked great. I couldn't stand it anymore, I had to see it. After I seen it, it wasn't what I expected but it was still a bang on movie. It was one of Sly's more serious roles for a long time, maybe even since Rocky. The cast is really unbeatable also, with Harvey Keitel who is great, Ray liota who does some good stuff in is and Robert de niro who is always great in his films. A powerful piece of police drama... This movie is a wonderful piece of storytelling. Sylvester Stallone is impressive as a small town sheriff standing aside in the midst of a police corruption. The acting was absolutely excellent with Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta and Robert De Niro all delivering outstanding performances. Every moment of this film is tense and exciting, especially the shootout ending.
