Editorial Review:
Italian star and filmmaker Massimo Troisi was dying of heart failure even before this film, his dream project, began production, and he prevailed upon British director Michael Radford (White Mischief) to see him and the film through to the end. (The 40-year-old Troisi, a beloved comic actor in Italy, died the day production wrapped.) Based on true events, Troisi plays a shy postman who strikes up an unlikely friendship with exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret). Through Neruda's example and tutelage, the hero learns to think of his Italian fishing village in lyrical terms, as well as how to talk to women and even find the strength to take his political stands. Sweet as it is, the film finally pushes beyond its charming borders to become an even more complex and poignant story about the pain of growing into one's destiny. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

if you encounter a book of Pablo Neruda poems, you will now pick it up directed with a light and humourous touch, Il Postino conveys a powerfull message about what is to be appreciated in the world - beauty, love, passion, friendship, loyalty. Can be enjoyed on many levels , and repays rewatching after 10 years, as I have just done.
We are introduced, seductively, via Pablo Neruda's relationship with the postman/peasant, to the concept of 'metaphore'( that's the Italian, and that makes it sound more poetic ! ). Often I find poetry difficult to listen to - here , in this... more info
Enjoyable and very sentimental foreign film If you like foreign film - you know those slow paced, sentimental pieces full of long shots of sun drenched countryside - then this is probably for you. The story of how a young man's life is changed forever by a poet is pleasantly engaging and amusing, but (to be honest) not that interesting. The film is a little too sentimental for my taste - the lives of the people are clearly extremely hard but we get no feeling for that or for the political corruption they endure. I was also annoyed by the film's... more info
Il Postino - A movie which has everything I first saw this film in the mid 90's when it was released. The naive qualities of massimo troisi (main character) lead to the beautiful unfolding of two relationships. My second viewing of the film I so often reflected upon was this past weekend when I hired a cinema and the film for my 50th birthday and was moved all the more as i witnessed 90 of my friends be moved to laughter and tears. The applause at the end said it all. It is a must on anyone's viewinglist of a soul movie. Coincidentally i write this... more info
Mesmerising This is why I have turned to watching so many foreign films lately. Not only is there a load of rubbish coming out of America at the moment but I just love the simplicity of Italian and French films in particular. You wouldn't have thought that the friendship between a poet and a postman would get you emotional (and I won't spoil it by revealing the end) but I was left in tears. A very beautiful, mesmerising film. 10/10.
