Not Irredeemably Bad I must admit I'm a little puzzled by all the glowing reviews. It's the same kind of puzzlement I usually feel after a Steven Soderbergh or Pedro Almodovar film - everyone raves about the beautiful direction, the strong characters, and all I see if a boring film that's at least half an hour too long. The other reviews here hint at it, but at times the pace is mind-numbingly slow. Most surprising good film I was expecting a bit of a chick flick by the look of the cover but was pleased to find it was far more than that. Really enjoyable storyline, a heart warming tale without being predictable or wishy washy
Moving and surreal Bodo is emotionally blocked and the whole film is a gradual, dreamy movement towards his awakening. His detacment pulls against the commitment of the nurse whose life he saves, and whose existence is also circumscribed. The pace is gentle and there is great resonance in the apparently empty space between the protagonists. The ending is gently (and sweetly) surreal. Benno Furman is excellent as the emotionally ravaged ex-soldier.
Stunning! I did A-Level German, and I had to write a 2000 word essay on an aspect of modern German life. I chose film, and my teacher recomended "The Princess and the Warrior" and "Run Lola Run" (Both in German, and to me, "Der Krieger und die Kaiserin" and "Lola rennt") This film was hard to understand at first, and some of the language was slightly complex, but the cinematography itself, the plot, camera work and the roles of the actors themselves was simply amazing!
