Create and play CD-Rs containing up to 30 CDs with Sony's new D-NE511 ATRAC/MP3 CD Walkman.

There are numerous buttons on the front, a two-line LCD screen and the usual d-pad for playing skipping and stopping the tracks.

Of course in reality this is far from the truth as the CD player has the ability to play both standard audio CDs and specifically burned CD-R/RWs. Using Sony's proprietary PC software, SonicStage Simple Burner and a CD writer on your PC, tracks can be burned on a CD-R/RW using either Sony's ATRAC3plus or ATRAC3 formats.

Taking either CD or MP3 files, tracks can be compressed by up to 1/20th of their original size, depending on the quality setting you chose. Music can be burned and compressed to 132, 105, 66, 64 or 48 kbps (kilobits per second) and compressing at 48 kbps, will allow you to record up to 490 songs (about 30 CDs) on a single 700Mb disc. Track information is provided via an Internet connection to Gracenote CDDB before burning and this information will then appear on the LCD display when you play the track.

Sound obviously varies according to the level at which you record it. CD quality MP3s are normally recorded at 128kbps and at this ratio you are still able to get some 170/180 tracks per CD, slightly more than the 13 or 14 you normally find.

The unit is powered by two 'AA' type batteries and will run for around 50 hours. And for the fashion-conscious the player comes in three different colours; blue, red and silver.

While the device's reliance on Sony will be annoying to some, it doesn't take away the fact that you've got a great music player. --Jason Denwood

  I like this mp3 player because you can have at least twenty albums or more depending on how many songs is on the albums you have that is what determines how much space you have left on the cd,on the one cd, which saves you carrying 20 albums in cd cases as this would be a lot of hassle unless you had a bag to carry them, also you can play tracks randomly so you dont know what is playing next or you can play a favourite selection of music from each and every individual album but trust me you have to read the... more info

  I bought this for my step daughter at xmas, battery life is really good and overall she is very happy with the player. I did however buy another set of headphones as she felt that the supplied ones were a bit fiddly and awkward so I bought some with slightly larger pads that hooked round the ears which is much better.

  this cd walkman as u are aware has the atrac3plus function which is great for storage as 30 albulm -> 1 cd ... great!
  BLUE? yeh great! dont be put off by it just because the pic is odd its really great and not to dull. u can get silver but DONT cos its bland and boring, stick out a bit!

• What they don't tell you
  This is an excellent player. A month in and still on the first set of batteries.
  There are some areas where the description does not say it all.
  1 It will play any any MP3 file - not just those created with the supplied software.

  2 The supplied software is in my opinion very poor. It works well enough but on a W2k or XP machine it will ONLY work when logged on as administrator, you also need to be on line in order to get the CD titles. For security I do not go on line as administrator. So use the... more info
