Editorial Review:

Lush production design and sparkling special effects make The Haunted Mansion pretty to look at. Terence Stamp, as a malevolent ghost of a butler, provides a suitable air of menace as he dematerialises to and fro. Marsha Thomason is lovely as a real estate agent hired to sell a haunted mansion, but in truth the ghostly owner of the mansion believes she is the reincarnation of his lost love. Wallace Shawn and Dina Waters make a modestly amusing comic pair as a ghostly husband and wife who bustle about. Jennifer Tilly, as a green disembodied head in a crystal ball, glitters appropriately. The movie also features endless clichés, futile attempts at humour, and Eddie Murphy. If you're looking for a movie based on a Disneyland ride, try the very clever Pirates of the Caribbean instead. --Bret Fetzer

Get ready for a thrilling afterlife when Walt Disney Pictures presents a fun-filled, fright-packed comedy adventure that’s loaded with eye-popping special effects and hair-raising laughs. Real estate agent Jim Evers (Eddie Murphy - The Nutty Professor, Dr. Doolittle) and his family come face-to-face with 999 grim, grinning ghosts when they’re stranded in the creepy and crumbling Old Gracey Manor. Now the entire Evers family – with the help of supernatural psychic Madame Leota (Jennifer Tilly - Bullets Over Broadway, Liar Liar) – must survive an unruly houseful of spirits and strange goings-on in a hilarious battle to break the mansion’s curse before the clock strikes 13.

Eddie Murphy stars in this spooky, CGI-packed Disney film, based on the famous Disney World attraction. He plays Jerry, a workaholic estate agent who interrupts his family's vacation to check out a remote mansion that's for sale. But soon he and his family are trapped in the haunted house and are screaming for their lives. Terence Stamp is the ghost butler, and Nathaniel Parker is the ghost owner who falls for Jerry's wife, Sara (Marsha Thomason), believing she is the reincarnation of his lost love and providing for both a refreshingly interracial, and frighteningly inter-dimensional romance. Jennifer Tilly has a great bit as a loudmouthed head in the crystal ball; Wallace Shawn and Dina Walters are the ghost servants. Zombies rise up from their graves to attack the living, but generally the film is harmless kid stuff that is bursting with cheerful colour, noise, bloodless shocks and refreshingly bathroom-free humour. Fans of the ride should be pleased, as it hits nearly every bump, from the barbershop quartet busts, to the ghostly passenger in the coach. Murphy hams it up royally and the rest of the cast is up for the challenge, especially Stamp, whose droll line readings provide a perfect balance of menace and mirth. Makeup maestro Rick Baker provided the non-CGI special effects.

  • "I see dead people" again
THE HAUNTED MANSION is another film where ordinary folks see dead people. The last was GOTHIKA. The original was, of course, SIXTH SENSE. It's evidently an inconvenient talent. (A very clever knock-off of the theme was THE OTHERS of a couple years ago starring Nicole Kidman. Its subtitle could have been, "I see live people.")

Eddie Murphy and Marsha Thomason are Jim and Sara Evers, a high-powered husband and wife realtor team. Sara is invited by Mr. Gracey (Nathaniel Parker) to visit his home for the... more info

  • Schlock-horror
Unamusing, incomprehensible, over-acted. The Haunted Mansion is a totally unimpressive film, once you take away the state-of-the art effects, but even these pale into comparison with 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. Eddie Murphy again has one of his off-days, playing an unfunny cliche ridden character, whilst Terrance Stamp must be needing the money.
Basic synopsis; work obsessed father, beautiful wife, wholesome kids, locked in haunted mansion. Dead owner, creepy butler. Family in peril, Dad and kids save... more info

  • Light hearted fun and entertainment.
Haunted mansion is loosely based on the Walt Disney world ghost ride of the same name. It will not tax your mind but it will amuse, entertain and generally while away a very pleasant hour or so. My kids loved it and although children with a timid disposition might find it scarey in places, I would think most modern children would lap it up. I certainly enjoyed it even on the second and third viewing (Don't your kids watch a new film five times?).

  • funny,entertaining ,scary
overall this was a fun family film that id recommend you to watch-but perhaps not buy.if you are part of a family with young children{12 and under}then this is the perfect film to watch, all together,on a rainy saturday evening.your children will most definately love it.some seens are fairly scary {for kids}and others exceedingly funny.
from the first seen you are engaged and want to carry on watching it.the story, with superb acting from the hilarious Eddie Murphy, follows a guy,his wife and... more info
