Excellent way to complete a collection This boxset is essential for collectors, being the only way to get a proper widescreen version of the Coen Brothers' debut Blood Simple - in the UK, at least. It also features the astounding and enigmatic Barton Fink, the (probably overrated) Raymond Chandler-inspired cult hit The Big Lebowski and the (probably underrated) screwball comedy throwback The Hudsucker Proxy. If you haven't seen the films before, be warned that the animated DVD menus of Barton Fink and Hudsucker Proxy contain spoilers. You... more info
CRAZY GOOD! This is a very well priced boxset, with three excellent films, and one slightly under-par (The Hudsucker Proxy). THE HUDSUCKER PROXY (Co-written by Sam Raimi) is pleasant enough in a whimsical way - in 'It's a Wonderful Life' type of way - but lacks the darker punch of the Coen's more mature work - as represented in this set. There are no extras on this disc. THE BIG LEBOWSKI - also lacking extras - is a tour-de-force of surreal imagery, and serendipitous plot turns. Jeff Bridges is excellent in... more info
It's the way the Coens wanted it... Even if it's light on extras, this is obviously a fine boxset... my reason for adding a review is that an earlier one queried the cuts to "Blood Simple". In the process, they elected to tighten the film up, losing a few minutes of footage. So doen't worry, it's not some studio-butchered version, but the Coens'... more info
(Mostly) brilliant stuff from the Coen Brothers. Blood Simple was the Coens' first picture, and it's a mediocre film with a relatively engaging plot centred on adultery and murder. They were clearly very much still finding their feet at this point and I'd only recommend this for fairly enthusiastic Coen Brothers fans. It does have some good moments, and is interesting in the context of the rest of their work, but it's nothing to write home about. Barton Fink is a stunning film that follows the attempts of a successful New York playwright, the Barton... more info
