Editorial Review:
The ultimate rags to riches story, Edith Gassion was born virtually on the streets in 1915 to street performers. Abandoned by her mother whilst still a young girl, Edith grew up entertaining passers-by on the streets with her singing, accompanying her father s acrobat act. Years of struggling were brought to an end when she was spotted by impresario Louis Leplee, who renamed her La Môme Piaf (Kid Sparrow) and got her lucrative dates singing for the Paris elite in cafés and cabaret. She began her recording career in 1936 and would eventually become one of the highest paid performers in the world. Whilst America was not immediately impressed with Edith Piaf, she persevered and eventually won a huge following, fuelled by her mesmerizing live performances. The epitome of style and passion, Edith died at the relatively young age of 47 in 1963.
