Editorial Review:
Paolo Sorrentino's gripping psychological thriller probes the dark secret harboured by middle-aged Italian loner Titta Di Girolamo, who has lived for eight years in an anonymous Swiss hotel. Elegantly dressed, he impassively spends his days in the lobby of the hotel bar, observing the guests and staff with cool detachment. But his icy demeanour cracks when he begins to talk to attractive barmaid Sofia, and the terrible truth about Tizza's concealed world begins to unravel. Featuring masterfully restrained performances from Toni Servillo and Olivia Magnani, 'The Consequences of Love' is a tightly plotted, stylishly executed thriller that marks Sorrentino as an exciting and original filmmaker

Fast-paced arthouse diversion... *some spoilers* This is a funny little film - both funny, ha!ha! and funny, curious. Many of the scenes are wittily directed and the script is also littered with witticisms which will make you chortle wryly rather than split your sides.
The curiosity lies in the fact that this is obviously an arty-farty type of film with really rather mainstream elements. So it's a thriller, of sorts, but there are plenty of stylistic flourishes and languorous images that are supposed to resonate portentously and thematically and... more info
hmmm, difficult to say... Technically, this film is excellent, and the acting is on the button. The story is powerful, and well told, and few films tell stories like this one. Can I recommend it? Hard to say. Films try to infect the viewer with a certain mood. Unfortunately, one of the moods this film aims for is tedium and it succeeds rather too well. Worth watching, if you aren't looking for fun, thrill, action, romance, comedy, sadness, scares, horror...
Stylish and unforgettable... When you think of Italian films, images from La Dolce Vita, Il Postino or Life is Beautiful come up . Feelings of sentimentality. I must admit I was dubious when I sat myself down and The Consequences of Love began. But from the opening sequence I knew I was about to watch a very different type of movie. What writer/director Paolo Sorrentino has managed to create is a very atmospheric film, David Lynch-esque in places. The performances from Toni Servillo adn Olivia Magnani are superb and suprisingly moving... more info
A modern day re-telling After I saw this film, I gave it a 'fair' rating at our film society. Its pace was agonizingly slow, some scenes were overly dramatic and the story seemed to drift. But something about it stayed with me and by the next morning I came to the conclusion that it is a subtle re-telling of the story of Christ. The bar maid was Mary Magdalene, in love with the enigmatic main character, a bit of a tease with other customers and yet, for him, seeming to want to change. His exposing the elderly gentlemen from next... more info
