Editorial Review:

26 years after WALKMAN created a revolutionary music lifestyle, the new Sony 8GB WALKMAN will now redefine it. Simply called ‘WALKMAN’, the new digital music player from Sony features spectacular ergonomic design and an exciting range of intelligent features that allow the user to enjoy music in a totally new way. Sony WALKMAN is a true extension of the user’s personal taste and musical preferences. At the press of a button, the ‘Artist Link’ function will search every artist, album and song stored on the device and offer suggestions of artists and bands closely linked to the genre of music being played at the time.

The 8GB NW-A1200 Sony WALKMAN features two new shuffle functions. By selecting ‘My Favorite Shuffle’, the device automatically selects the most listened to 100 songs and plays them at random. The ‘Time Machine Shuffle’ function randomly selects a year and plays all of the songs from that particular year that are currently held on the device. Featuring an advanced organic EL 1.5" display, Sony WALKMAN not only incorporates a range of great features, it also offers the ultimate in ease of use through an appealing user interface and fantastic visibility.

Once switched on, a mobile phone style ‘Home’ menu appears offering nine different options that can be selected via the four-way directional button. These include ‘Music Library’, ‘Play Mode’, ‘Initial Search’, ‘Intelligent Shuffle’, ‘Favorite 100’, ‘Play History’, ‘Settings’, ‘Playlist’ and ‘Now Playing’. Music can be searched in a variety of ways, via ‘Genre’, ‘Artist’, ‘Album’, ‘Song’, ‘Release Date’, ‘Rating’ and ‘Recently Transferred’, all of which can be scrolled through to enable users to find their music faster and easier. Sony WALKMAN records three years of playback history that can be searched and also features the first ever ‘Initial Search’ on a hard disc device, allowing the user to scroll from A-Z for ultimate ease of use.

alongside Sony’s new range of MP3 Players comes a new version of their music file management application software, SonicStage CP. The software enables users to download music files onto a PC and transfer them to multiple digital music players such as the popular WALKMAN® family. With SonicStage CP, music lovers can manage their music files with an increased variety of codec technologies. In addition to ATRAC, ATRAC Advanced Lossless, MP3 and unsecured WMA, the new SonicStage CP software is compatible with AAC codec, making it possible to collectively manage music files stored in a variety of codec technologies according to each user’s hardware and systems environment.

This new development makes it much easier to download as well as transfer music to a number of different music players (although WMA and AAC files with protected copyright cannot be transferred). The new software enables high-quality recordings from CD to AAC format at a bitrate of 80~320kbps. Also, with this new software package, all sound files formatted in 3gp, mp4 and m4a can be imported onto a PC.

The latest feature introduced with SonicStage CP is Sony’s "Artist Link" feature. Currently built into the CONNECT Player and WALKMAN® "A series", this new feature will be available for use on PCs with Sonic Stage CP as well as compatible digital music players. By clicking the "link" button on the Sonic Stage CP screen while playing music, the artist link window appears and randomly selects related songs for playback. SonicStage CP will also allow music-lovers to save and manually edit these selections and even transfer the data to compatible WALKMAN devices.

  • randomisation? seen more on a chess board.
Ok, I realise that 'random' is, by definition, a pretty difficult quality to measure, but let me tell you this. I've got the 20gb version of this admittedly smart looking toy. Sound is excellent (as you'd expect from Sony) but it's SO DAMN FRUSTRATING when, amongst 1800 songs, the same ones get played time after time. Examples: certain songs get played at least twice in a 1.5 hr session. Skipping one track seemingly adds to the likelihood of a song heard only half an hour ago being played again. Several... more info

  • Could be better
I upgraded to this model from my old sony nw-e99 mainly to get more storage space. that part of the player is great as are the shuffle functions. however there are a few minor problems which other people have mentioned here but i thought i would reiterate them for those considering buying this model.
    1. screen is almost impossible to see when sun is out. i thtought this would be a minor thing but now its summer its a real problem when you want to use the screen
    2. unlike the nw-e99 its very hard... more info

  • Let down by Sonicstage
I purchased this model as a replacement for a Samsung model which was not "fit for my purposes". The Samsung was lighter and more attractive and was intuitively far easier to use, rather than the Sony which takes a great deal of clicking of directional buttons and reading of on-line manuals to get where you want.
However, the biggest problem was (and still is) with the software, Sonicstage. It took me 5 attempts to install it over a 4 hour period. I eventually succeeded after downloading the latest... more info

  • Great Little Player, Just Install The Most Up To Date Firmware & SonicStage
I got this as a bargain online and read the reviews after I clicked on "Confirm Order". (Never a good idea to do that!).
People were reporting the nightmares of using Connect/SonicStage software, and I was convinced I'd regret my purchase. However someone recommending installing the Firmware 3.0 and SonicStage 4.2 from the Sony site..and the software transferred files no problem. (Think this applies to NWA1000 and NWA3000 too?).
In fact I have no moans about it at all seeing as I found a volume... more info
