Use that self-timer! This is the Gorillapod for a compact camera.
Although most compact cameras have a tripod socket this is invariably at one end of the body and they feel unstable with some of the small tripods sold for use with a compact camera. This isn't a problem for the Gorillapod as you can bend the legs to make the camera nice and stable. The Gorillapod is more than an ordinary tripod though, I've wrapped it around the banisters in a restaurant to take a group photo and wrapped it around a fence post for outdoor... more info
This should be in every serious photographer's camera bag What a wonder this little thing is! Its so easy to use, so versatile and I have found so many uses for it. Don't believe what others have said about it being too light and flimsy. They could be talking about this one's little siblings, but the SLR Zoom Gorillapod can easily support the weight of my Nikon D80 with 18 - 135mm zoom leans attched. It also supports the weight of my Canon HG10 camcorder with an optional Canon wide angle lens attached to it, a lens that is very, very heavy. I haven't... more info
Great, but needs a tripod head Once you get out of the mindset that this is a mini-tripod, and start wrapping it around trees, this little beauty really comes into it's own. However, when it is wrapped around a tree, you'll need to point the camera in the right direction. For this i recommend a small ball head, so as not to foul on your tree of choice. Small enough to fit in a moderate-sized camera bag, too.
Brilliant! The GorillaPod is amazing. So far it has held up my camera perfectly when sideways, on uneven surfaces and even upside-down! The legs rotate 360 degrees and can bend and twist into near any shape you would ever need to use. It fits on the camera with a small screw (so if you have a small hole in the bottom of your camera this is what it's for).
