Good camera This is a really good camera, depending what you want. It is more of a jack of all trades in that an SLR has better image quality and a traditional compact is easier to carry around. But that was the reason I bought it. I need something a can carry that takes up little room - to get that I'd need multiple lenses etc.
It really isn't fair to compare with a DSLR - if you want one buy one - but if you want to try something more advanced than a point and shoot have a look at this.
If you have a problem reading the SD card in Windows XP If you have a problem reading the SD card in Windows XP the chances are you have a High Capacity memory card. Unless you keep your copy of XP up to date, you need Microsoft hotfix 923293 (google it) to read high capacity cards. High capacity is defined as starting at 1Gb, but standard HD ends at 4Gb, so there is an overlap. Look at your card; if it says SDHC and you can't read it in the PC, try the hotfix.
Made in China Bought this as my old S3IS was stolen and must admit there are better cameras for the money on the market.
There is no substantial innovation compared to the discontinued model:
- The camera is graining in the same manner as the S3IS when set to ISO above 200
- For a common user the higher mpx is literally for nothing and so is the slot for the optional flash
- The AF is not even a bit faster
- Some parts of the plastic the body is made of have a cheap look and remind me of the... more info
About as good as it gets I have owned the Canon S5 IS for six months and have grown to appreciate its very comprehensive functions, its ease of use, and its astounding capabilities for close-up and telephoto work. Many times, I have been with people using a full SLR camera and they have been very surprised at the fantastic macro shots this camera can take of tiny insects or the insides of flowers.
