Editorial Review:

Pulling few punches and garnering its fair share of headlines as a result, The Tudors is a controversial, yet compelling period piece, that dramatically tells the story of the early years of King Henry VIII. Not for nothing though has it attracted its fair share of awards attention.

For The Tudors is a complex drama, and not one to simplify its storylines. The young Henry, for instance, is exploring his muddled romances and his insecurities, against the challenges his kingdom is facing. It’s a plateful for him to deal with, and in the hands of a superb performance from Jonathan Rhys Meyers--a real revelation in the role--as the young Henry, it’s all vividly and skillfully knitted together.

But The Tudors isn’t just about its central character, for there’s a terrific supporting cast at work too. Sam Neill’s Cardinal Wolsey, Jeremy Northam’s Thomas More and Natalie Dormer’s Ann Boleyn are just some who earn plaudits here. Behind the camera there’s the pen of Elizabeth writer Michael Hirst at work, and he too deserves much credit, clearly getting his teeth into the fascinating subject matter.

The Tudors is, undoubtedly, a graphic production, and earns its 15 certificate comfortably. It’s also been knocked for the liberties it takes with its history when putting its story across, with some justification. But it’s also most certainly terrific television, mixing in high production values with strong performances. In short, the ten episodes here will simply have you thirsting for the next series. Not before you’ve rewatched season one a few times, though... --Jon Foster

Passion, ambition and treachery collide in this compelling, daring, big budget drama about the tumultuous early part of King Henry VIII's infamous 40-year reign...Bold and passionate about his country and his women, King Henry’s obsession with ensuring his legacy led to beheading friends and foes, waging wars and challenging the Catholic Church – events that would forever change the British Empire.

Focusing on the early years of King Henry VIII's reign, THE TUDORS looks at the colourful personal life and tremendously influential political life of the monarch. King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) was obsessed with having a male heir, which led to him marrying six times. Rome's decision not to grant him a divorce led to him taking on the power of the Catholic Church, changing Christianity forever in England. Features all ten episodes of the first series.

  • trash and porn
No sorry this is pure trash. Badly researched, badly written and badly acted in a strange Irish accent. I have stopped wondering why why why they turned Henry 8. into a strapping youth and I have found the answer: somebody (I guess it is a middle aged man making these decisions) think that all tv viewers want is trash and porn. All men have perpetual erections. All women start to pant when a man touches them. Oh well, not queen Catherine who seems to have wandered in from another kind of series... more info

  • The Tudors. Series 1
If you are interested in learning about the Tudor period and the court of Henry this is a series best missed.
Inaccurate in historical facts and the dress of the time. Poorly portrayed, I only watched the first three episodes, but could take no more of this fantasy. Why I ask is it necessary to alter the facts when the life of Henry and his court is so well documented?

  • FANTASTIC!!!!
this BBC drama is absolutely fantastic!!!. full of murder, sex and betrayal, just as you would expect from the Tudor dynasty.some people may moan that some historical details are not correct, but who CARES!!, when youve got the absolutely Gorgeous Henry Clavill as Charles Brandon and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who must surely be THE SEXIEST MAN alive, as Henry( lucky Anne Boleyn!!!).Have watched these over and over, and cant wait for series 2 to come out on dvd aswell. im a great fan of anything Tudor and if you... more info

  • Beware: Highly Addictive!
As a history student people assume I will be constantly annoyed by the historical inaccuracies that feature relatively frequently throughout this series but I honestly couldn't care less! The casting has been well done (I doubted Jonathon Rhys-Meyers at first but he becomes an excellent Henry VIII in my opinion) and the seductive and dramatic plot had me hooked from the first episode.
    Can't wait for Season 2!
