Obelix sings! Okay, I know, the title is a bit unfair. In truth though Depardieu has been wasting his talents in mediocre fare of late. I really like much he has done in the past but in truth really wasn't expecting much from this.
It's a simple set-up, Alain,(Depardieu), is a club singer doing the circuit when he meets Marion,(Cecile de France), and the two end up spending the night together. A relationship of sorts blossoms but the two are doomed to never fulfill the promise of love.

Understated The singer of the title is a simple man of which much is expected. But can he step up and meet his destiny? The lead actors are breathtakingly acurate in that peculiarly French way. The performances are subtle, but nevertheless heart wrenching. GDP plays the singer with surprising sensitivity, letting the intelligent and well paced script breathe through him. Engaging and underplayed, but powerful all the same.
Bittersweet and charming At times a little slow-moving but overall a lovely film. Depardieu gives a superb performance as a sentimental and aging crooner who genuinely likes his audience and who is not cynical about his work in a dance hall that caters for older, often lonely people. His admiration and pursuit of a glamorous young women who at times humiliates him is painful to watch and ones sympathies are firmly on his side, at least at first. Latterly her emerging vulnerability makes her seem less hard and confident.
An old fashioned charming movie No explosions, not overacting, no zaniness. And when you have a delightful script, and wonderful performances, you don't need any of that. I normally struggle a little with subtitled films but 20 minutes into this one I had stopped even noticing it WAS subtitled. Gerard Depardieu reminds us how good an actor he used to be before he made a whole bunch of bad movies. Touching, engaging and delightful. An easy five star movie.
