Editorial Review:
Panasonic has stepped into the world of high definition videos with the Lumix DMC-TZ5. The Lumix DMC-TZ5 has a 28 mm wide-angle setting to fit sweeping landscapes into a single frame, and a telephoto setting to pull in subjects from far away and capture even the subtlest details in facial expressions. It records video in 720p and is equipped with a 10-megapixel sensor, with a high sensitivity range going up to 6400 ISO and a light detection system with several levels. Gone are the days of problems caused by backlighting and overexposure, because the Panasonic TZ5 comes with a Mega O.I.S image stabiliser and a 9-point AF focus, meaning you can pinpoint faces in photos and ensure subjects' natural skin tones are maintained. For backgrounds, the DMC-TZ5 has an intelligent flash with red-eye reduction and slow synchronisation modes, which help to prevent colour alteration. There is also a number of colour, scene and automatic modes, allowing you to really explore your creative side. As well as being compatible with Pictbrige, the Lumix DMC-TZ5 also has an HD audio/video output so you can enjoy your creations on an HD TV using an optional component video cable.
Panasonic is pleased to introduce Lumix digital camera, 9.1-megapixel DMC-TZ5, featuring a 28mm wide-angle 10x optical zoom Leica DC lens (equivalent to 28-280mm on a 35mm film camera). The 28mm wide angle lens captures the subject and the scene wider at the same standpoint than normal 35mm camera does and you can zoom in or out to magnify a distant subject when desired with the 10x optical zoom. The Intelligent Auto mode, which comprises various shooting-assist functions, has been advanced for the DMC-TZ5 by newly adding the Intelligent Exposure feature and Digital Red-eye. The high-performance image-processing LSI has newly entered its fourth generation, to be reborn as Venus Engine IV to assure higher-quality pictures with an advanced signal processing system. The DMC-TZ5 is renowned for packaging a remarkable 28mm wide angle 10x optical zoom lens in a compact body. Notably, the DMC-TZ5 newly integrates the capability of recording 720pHD (high-definition) motion pictures together with its direct output function allowing users to enjoy watching both still and motion pictures in impressive HD quality on a large-screen HDTV via an optional component cable. The DMC-TZ5 boasts Intelligent LCD function, which detects the lighting condition and controls the brightness level of the LCD in 11 fine steps, to offer a display with most appropriate clarity in any situations with newly developed 460,000-dot high resolution in 3.0-inch. Great all round camera I bought this after owning/using several other cameras. I wanted something smallish I could carry around that would give me enough versatility to allow the SLR to stay at home. In the shop it was up against the Canon G9. I took some pictures with both and the one that required the least effort to get a good shot was the TZ5. The winning factors were: Very good image stabilization
Excellent lens and zoom range
Great screen
Good build quality
Easy to use What's not... more info
Great compact camera I was puzzled which camera to get - I have two old digital cameras but wanted one with image stabilisation. I bought this because of this feature and its long zoom. I haven't been disappointed so far - the zoom is terrific and coupled with image stabilisation is extremely effective. The camera is slightly bigger than my old Canon Ixus but still fits in a slightly roomier pocket.
I bought a Class 6 (6Mb/s) memory card, but when you get the camera its instructions ask for a Class 10 one to allow HD... more info
extremely fragile LCD I bought this camera in June 2008 and enjoyed using it very much. I was also very pleased with the photos I made with it. However one morning recently I got it out of its case to find the LCD screen damaged after no apparent trauma, I had not dropped it or bumped against anything nor had it been exposed to extreme heat or cold. I sent it off to the Panasonic repair centre who say it has been damaged and therefore the warranty is not valid and it will cost me £144.00 to repair. I'm pretty upset about... more info
